Evan, Steve, thanks a lot for your supportive reply.

I indeed disabled the firewall and disabled all startup items via msconfig, too. Also, I did not change my host file.

A few minutes ago I have just deinstalled AVG Free 8 and - surprise, surprise - everything works again. I did not know that AVG Free contains firewalling features. Another lesson learned...
